Olympics

In 1776 BC the first true Olympic games were held. The birth date of those Olympics games became the first year of the Olympiad calender. The games were held every four years at Olympia as a festival to honour the god Zeus. Legend tells us that the first winner of an Olympic footrace was Corybos from a place called Elis foot races were about 185 metres long. By 384 BC there was 18 Olympic events. Some myths say that the first contest was the chariot races. It lasted 5 days. They had a 1 day festival before the Olympics. They stopped the Olympics when there was a war between City States. In the middle of the festival they sacrificed 100 oxen for their gods and their goddesses. The first Olympic games were held 15 km from the mouth of the Alpheus river on the Ionian Sea. Many myths and stories tell us about the Olympic Games. The Olympic games still go on today. The Olympics fame grew and as it did Olympia had many people come there to watch and also new sports were added. the Olympics were a test of strength. Like who could run the fastest in hoplite armour.
