Theatre

I bet you are thinking in your head... Why did the ancient Greek have theatre? Well they were made to honor there gods and goddesses. Actually going to the theatre was really important because it was part of there religious lives. The actors wore exaggerated masks and platform shoes so that the audience could see them. The masks helped magnify there voices so that the actors didn't talk in there regular voices. In ancient Greece it didn't cost much to go to the theatre. The price of the theatre was two obols which is a third of a drachma. If you couldn't afford the price, the city state would pay for your admission. All of the parts were acted by men even the women parts. The famous theatre in Epidauras had more than14.000 seats. It was built to have perfect acoustics like a person sitting in the farthest row from the stage could he people whisper in the first row. This is just a tip so you don't get in trouble in ancient Greece: I advise you not to make fun of someone in that theatre or else they might her you!

Olympics

In 1776 BC the first true Olympic games were held. The birth date of those Olympics games became the first year of the Olympiad calender. The games were held every four years at Olympia as a festival to honour the god Zeus. Legend tells us that the first winner of an Olympic footrace was Corybos from a place called Elis foot races were about 185 metres long. By 384 BC there was 18 Olympic events. Some myths say that the first contest was the chariot races. It lasted 5 days. They had a 1 day festival before the Olympics. They stopped the Olympics when there was a war between City States. In the middle of the festival they sacrificed 100 oxen for their gods and their goddesses. The first Olympic games were held 15 km from the mouth of the Alpheus river on the Ionian Sea. Many myths and stories tell us about the Olympic Games. The Olympic games still go on today. The Olympics fame grew and as it did Olympia had many people come there to watch and also new sports were added. the Olympics were a test of strength. Like who could run the fastest in hoplite armour.

Education

The boys learned how to write, read and quote literature. They also learned how to play a musical instrument and were trained for the military. Boys went to school at the age of 7 or went to the barracks if they lived in Sparta. Also the girls learned how to read, write and do simple arithmetic so they could manage the household.

The kids used to have reading classes, writing, math, singing and instrument.Ya think thats a lot!! Wow I wish school was like that for me...... Anyways there was also different philosophers and scientists. It is funny how it reminds me of Bill Nye the science guy. So where was I again! oh ya i was talking about the different scientists and philosophers.

Well some of the most commen ones were Thales which brought ideas of geometrey to us. There was also ummm let me think what was his name.. of course it was Plato. Pretty cool name. Wow thats is an easy name to remember and i forgot it!!! well he belived that the world was made up of ideas and forms. Socrates taught people to question and Pythagoras invented mordern methods used in math. Aristotle belived that the world was phisical and Erasistratus was a doctor and made important discoveries about the heart and the brain. There was also another guy thats name was Euclid and he was a cool mathamation and Aristarchus knew the earth moved around the sun.

Government

Many of the city states were democracies. Adult men were entitled to be a citizen. Only men were allowed to become citizens. The women were not considered to become citizens. Some city states were ruled by rich and powerful land owners that were supported by armies. All citizens voted to decide how that city was run, what taxes to pay or if they wanted to go to war. Poor workers were even paid a full days wages to attend the government assemblies. The different types of governments were monarchies, oligarchies and tyrannies. Also the greek government envolved slowly.

P.S Thats not fair that the women were treated so poorly...if i were there i would of put a stop to it.I f they didnt listen to me i would of made a rule that says Listen to Amal or we will give you a painful death.
